The Kane County Budget at a Glance
In Fiscal 2025, Kane County’s total budgeted revenue was $433.16 Million. Much of the revenue budgeted in 2025 came from property taxes and sales tax. Kane County’s Reserve Fund was its largest fund in 2025 due to 35 Million in American Rescue plan money. This money will be fully allocated in Fiscal 2025 and will not be available to balance future budgets in 2026 and beyond.
In Fiscal 2025, Kane County’s total budgeted revenue is $433.16 million. About one-third of this amount, $140.46 Million, is budgeted in the General Fund, which funds Kane County’s day-to-day operations. The remaining $292.69 Million is budgeted in Other Funds, which are special funds which are allocated to specific, designated purposes.
The chart below shows how Kane County’s total revenue, General Fund revenue, COVID-19 related special revenue, and all other revenue funds have been budgeted annually since 2020:

Total revenue rose in 2021, and it has since dropped below 2020 levels. That increase was primarily due to large amounts of federal government funding associated with the 2020 CARES Act and the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. Property tax and sales tax rates have remained flat in that time.
Although the County’s total revenue has dropped since 2020, Kane County’s revenue budgeted in the General Fund to cover day-to day-operations has been increasing each year.
As with County revenue, Kane County’s expenses are either budgeted in the General Fund for routine county operations, or into special use, restricted expense funds. Although only one-third of the county’s revenue is allocated to the General Fund, this fund determines whether the County is able to meet critical commitments, like payroll, benefits and county services on which residents rely.
