The purpose of governmental services is to serve constituents and to ensure rights and needs are met. County governments in Illinois and Kane County government in particular provide a variety of services that are not covered in any other way.
Some of these services are managed by elected individuals like the judges who hear criminal and civil cases brought before them and manage the county justice system. This system serves all of Kane County and endeavors to provide fair hearings for criminal actions; family matters like divorces and adoptions; and conflicts between individuals and companies.
Law enforcement in the county is supported by the State’s Attorney’s office which investigates and prosecutes criminal acts. The office is led by an elected state’s attorney.
The county clerk is an elected official who handles a number of administrative tasks for the county. One of these is the management of public records like: birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, and passport services. The clerk’s office also provides administration of elections in Kane County.
There are many other services provided by the county as well. These are either headed by an elected official or overseen by the elected county board. Some of these services include: animal control, emergency management, and veterans affairs.
Without the services provided by county governments, the public would find many of their needs go unmet. Taxes make these services possible. Here is a more complete list of services provided by Kane County: https://www.kanecountyil.gov/Pages/AZ-Services.aspx

Who Represents You?
Kane County is divided into 24 districts. Each district elects a representative to serve on the County Board, which functions much like a local legislature—overseeing services, budgets, and policies.
What Happens at Board Meetings?
The Kane County Board meets monthly to discuss and vote on resolutions and other issues facing the county. At these meetings, the County Chairperson leads the board members through the agenda, which usually includes voting on proclamations celebrating achievements within the county and resolutions to approve decisions made in one of the many committees board members serve on. The focus of these resolutions varies widely. The board might vote on whether to approve new communication devices for law enforcement, or they may vote to authorize psychiatric services for individuals at the Juvenile Justice Center. The board determines how to best allocate county funds and taxpayer dollars to serve the community.
Citizens also have the opportunity to publicly address the board at meetings with comments and concerns.
The Kane County Board meets once a month to vote on resolutions and allocate taxpayer funds. Meetings are led by Board Chair Corinne Pierog and include:
- Recognizing community accomplishments through proclamations
- Approving new services or equipment, like communication devices for law enforcement
- Funding mental health and psychiatric services for youth in detention
- Making decisions on infrastructure, safety, and public health
Citizens are encouraged to attend and even speak during public comment sessions.
