Kane County Board: Tax Levy & Budget Reality

Despite rising costs, Kane County has not raised its overall property tax levy in over a decade—since around 2011. The only increases have come from new construction value, not higher rates on existing properties.

In 2024, the County Board considered a 3.4% levy increase (about $2 million) aligned with inflation—but this would have been the first CPI adjustment since 2013.

FY2025 Kane County Budget Highlights:

  • Total Budget: ~$416.6 million
  • General Fund: $138.9 million (covers courts, law enforcement, admin)
  • County’s Share of Property Tax: ~$58.7 million
  • What Residents Pay to Kane County: ~4% of your total property tax bill

Budget Concerns Ahead:

  • A $25–29 million gap was covered using reserves in FY2025.
  • Without new revenue, Kane County could face a $40 million shortfall by 2026, leading to cuts in public services or staff reductions.

The County is considering a 0.75% public safety sales tax referendum in April 2025, which could generate $51 million annually to stabilize funding without raising property taxes.
